First Love

First Love

As I sat on the deck overlooking the river
I could see the little island dark
Beneath the shimmering Cottonwood trees
Where I felt my heart.

The river was hazy and lumbering golden blue
Caressing the nasturtium bank.
I looked up through its sparkling eyes
And in its pool, sank.

I remember the first time on
It’s cool grass in the moonlight
Touching lips, kissing
This daughter of the night.

We had driven from school
In her blue car
Up the red cliffs through river birch
Touching Evening’s Star.

Then at night down to the bank
Where the striped bass ran.
Rolling through life’s surface,
Our hearts dove and swam.
